About

General Site Info

This is my personal web site. I created it to learn how to design web pages and keep myself occupied when just sitting around. I started this page back in January of 2003 and since then have posted 256 of the most interesting stories on the web.

I have 3-½ readers who frequent this page who have been much more active than myself at keeping it going. The 3-½ of them have posted 586 comments and 13 complaints.

Thanks to my most active viewers:

  • Beverly, who reached 136 comments at 08:20 AM on 04.20.05
  • mook, who reached 108 comments at 10:26 AM on 04.24.05

Technologies

Hardware

Nothing you see here would have been possible without my Powerbook and all of the hard work from the fine folks over at Apple Computer. I am currently running a 15" TiBook at 667 MHz with 768 MB of SDRAM. The Powerbook is wirelessly connected to the web through a 802.11b Airport connection and into a 3Com HomeConnect Cable Modem. The wire goes into the wall and is picked up from the guys over at Starpower Communications at 3 5 Mbps.

Hosting has been provided by Total Choice Hosting, who provide me with 700mb of space on Unix boxes and 20gb of bandwidth per month.

Software

All work for this site has been produced on the most advanced operating system in the world, Mac OS X. The site is hand coded in Strict XHTML 1.0 and uses CSS for the layout. Both the XHTML and CSS should fully vailidate. The site runs on Apache 1.3.34 and uses JavaScript, PHP 4.4.2, PERL 5.8.7, FTP, and MySQL 4.1.18.

The applications used in producing the site are the most advanced available in the world. Graphics are provided by Adobe Photoshop, FTP access from Trasmit, and debugging through Safari and Firefox.

Content management is made possible through Movable Type 3.2 and a handfull of it's many useful pluggins:

Navigation aids

  1. All archive pages have rel=previous, next, and home links to aid navigation in text-only browsers and screen readers. Mozilla users can also take advantage of this feature by selecting the View menu, Show/Hide, Site Navigation Bar, Show Only As Needed (or Show Always). Opera 7 has similar functionality.
  2. The home page and all archive pages include a search box (access key 4). Advanced search options are also available.
